3 Easy Household Hacks You Can Make With Reusable Items

Did it ever occur to you that the small things around you could ease your life and help you save some money? With a little creativity and effort, you actually can! Here are three household hacks that you can try:

1. The Drink Can Tab as a Double Hanger

Have a quick look into your closet. Is it crammed with all your dresses, sweatshirts, T-shirts, pullovers, cardigans and other outfits? If you are short on closet space, try to use a drink can tab to connect two hangers as solution to it. These double hangers really are a great solution for your limited closet space. Also, if you like to keep your outfits in specific matching sets or for uniforms, this hack can really help you as you no longer have to waste that  few minutes to find the other pair of your uniform.

2. Juice Bottles as a Multi-Purpose Storage Unit

We use bottles every day, for juice and milk, and we throw it out instantly after we're done using it. How about creating something out of it? A storage unit, perhaps? Think of a space in your house or office that might need storage units and think creatively what design can be created out of the juice bottles that are suitable with that place. For instance, if you are thinking of a storage unit for a kids’ playroom, you can cut the bottle with a big opening and decorate it with bright, colourful ribbons to store their pencils and colouring pencils. No need to spend on new storage units!

3. Bread Clips to Save Worn Out Slipper

Oh no! Your slippers are suddenly worn out? Well.. don’t worry about having to buy new slippers as you totally can save it using bread bag clips! It's really easy. You just need to plug up the worn holes with bread clips as in the picture below and your slippers are good to use for another few months!

Disappearing As If by Magic

Why does salt disappear when you put it in a glass of water and stir it? Similarly, where does the sugar go to when you do the same? You can easily wipe off the writings and drawings that you made with a whiteboard marker using a cloth or duster, but when you accidentally use a permanent marker, oops! No matter how hard you scrub, it just would not rub off. Why is this so?

Solvents are chemicals that will cause something to dissolve, disperse or separate into tinier particles. They will break the chemical bonds of the substance, for example salt, without altering its chemical properties.

Water is considered a universal solvent because it is able to dissolve most compounds. When salt or sugar is stirred into a glass of water, the molecules that make up the salt or sugar is broken down into smaller units that are not visible with the unaided eye.
Acetone is a solvent that is used to remove nail polish, whereas ethanol, which is a type of alcohol, is a solvent that is used to remove paint.

So, if you use a permanent marker on a whiteboard by mistake, run to the nearest pharmacy and get some alcohol swabs. These small square pieces of cotton soaked in ethanol will do the trick of wiping off the ink.

Experiment: Making an eggshell go soft

Materials:
1 egg, drinking glass, vinegar

Steps:
1. Gently place the egg into the glass.
2. Pour vinegar over the egg to completely cover it.
3. Wait 2 to 3 days. Take the egg out of the glass, and feel the shell.
Fact:
The vinegar reacts with the calcium in the eggshell, dissolving it. This makes the shell feel soft and rubbery. This shows the importance of calcium to make the shell strong, just like the calcium in our bones.

Glossary:
Dissolve [dih-zolv] to break up or undo a tie or bond
Molecule [mol-uh-kyool] a quantity of a substance, whose weight is numerically equal to its molecular weight
Compound [kom-pound] composed of two or more parts, elements, or ingredients
Acetone [as-i-tohn] a colourless, volatile, flammable liquid

A Lever Is Clever

How many times can your lift your friend higher than your head? How many times can your friend lift you? It doesn’t sound easy, but it is – and it’s fun too. When you and your friend are on a seesaw, that’s exactly what you are doing!
The seesaw you and your friend are riding is really a kind of machine called a lever. A lever makes pushing and lifting easy, even when things are hard to move. The simplest kind of lever is just a straight stick or board and something to rest on. Suppose you want to move a big rock in your garden. You can push one end of a strong board under the edge of that rock. Then you can rest the middle of the board on a log. This will be the resting place, or fulcrum. The end of the board near you will stick up. Now push down on the high end of the board. The other end will move up – and the heavy rock will move too.

When you ride a seesaw, you and your friends take turns using it as a lever. The middle of the seesaw is the fulcrum. Your weight pushes one end down and lifts your friend. Then your friend’s weight pushes the other end down and lifts you.
Have you tried to dislodge a nail using the claw of a hammer? It would be extremely difficult to do it with just your bare hands. The head of the hammer that rests on the board acts as a lever, and when you pull the hammer’s handle down, the claw will easily lift the nail out from the wood.

Experiment: To construct a tool that uses a lever (Lever crocodile)

Materials:
6 strips of cardboard (6cm long and 2cm wide), 7 paper fasteners, scissors.

Steps:
1. Arrange the 6 cardboard strips into three X shapes in a row.
2. Poke through the 7 paper fasteners where the cardboard strips overlap.
3. Make a crocodile head out of construction paper and attach it to one end of the tool.

Glossary:

Fulcrum [fuhl-kruhm] point of rest on which a lever turns.

Teka-teki Penyedut Minuman!
